What The Festival Fuses Music, Art and Giant Wading Pools

Ten miles west of the tiny Oregon farming community of Dufur, a new breed of transformational festival is laying down its funky roots.
Held in the open fields and sunlit glades of Wolf Run Ranch from June 19th to 22nd, What The Festival is a four-day music and camping festival that has earned high praise over the past two years for its intimate feel, seamless production and Disneyland-meets-Burning Man aesthetic.

It’s no secret that the Pacific Northwest has become flooded with music festivals. And as the world awakens to their power, the masses shout and clamor: More tickets! Bigger stages!
Synergetic corporate sponsorships! More often than not, organizers oblige, and that homey little gathering you made pilgrimage to last summer morphs into something a bit more sinister, fueled by overpriced light beer and profit margins.
What The Festival is something different though…

what the festival 2014 lineup

Sure, founders Glen and Tiffany Boyd could stuff the foothills of Wolf Run Ranch with a capacity 5,000 attendees, but they’re capping it well below that (In 2013, they sold 3,000 tickets). Breathing room, after all, is underrated. They could cut back on amenities to bring in high-priced mainstream superstars, but that might mean fewer interactive art installations in The Illuminated Forest, an end to The Oasis — a “mobile bathhouse environment” of showers, saunas and grooming stations — or, most ominously, no more Splash Stage, which is, you guessed it, a stage with a giant wading pool in front of it.

Which brings us to the lineup, a nice little tour of the electronic music universe rounded out by The Glitch Mob, Nightmares On Wax, RL Grime, Claude VonStroke, Cashmere Cat, Phutureprimitive, heRobust and Break Science.
GA tickets, which include walk-in camping, are on sale now for $200. OMG tickets (WTF’s version of VIP) are $300 and get you onto the festival grounds one day early, plus a bunch of perks and goodies like express check-in, drink tickets, passes to the hookah lounge, shower passes, etc. And for the luxury-minded among us, there’s an array of fancy boutique camping options. Check out WTF’s “Getting Here” page for more info on travel and local resources.
