[WATCH] Painting Music: Tim Bavington Transforms Sheet Music Into Abstract Paintings

September 4th, 2015

Tim Bavington combines two things he loves – music and painting – in a creative way to fabricate one truly unique style all his own. He has devised a way to paint songs – not a picture or representation of a line or lyric from the song, but the song itself. Bavington turns a song into a painting by using a solid line of color to represent each note, his own interpretation of the musician’s piece, his own unique cover of the song. He has been making art like this since the 1990’s and has recreated songs from the likes of  Oasis, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

Located in downtown Las Vegas where he lives and teaches art at the University of Las Vegas, Bavington’s warehouse studio is in deep contrast to the city it resides in. No glitz, no glamour, no neon lights; it is calm and peaceful, and you would probably think it was abandoned if for some reason you ended up walking past it. However, it is what happens on the inside that is eye-catching. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city of lights, Bavington quietly produces music like no one else, using a car retouch paint gun. At first impression Tim Bavington is not extraordinary. Plain clothes, unkempt hair, mild demeanor; it does not seem as if he is about to shock you. But, like his studio, it’s what is on the inside that counts. It is his creativity that shocks you – he has the incredible ability to take one of your favorite songs and turn it into one of your favorite paintings. His life, his mind, his work is like no one else’s in the world. That is what is most captivating about watching him work and observing his process: you are witnessing something you’ve never seen before and you gain a real appreciation for not only the finished work, but the time and effort and imagination required to produce a piece or art of that caliber.
