Unexpected Historical Location Cements Outlook 2014 as a Must-Attend

With festival season upon us, many music fans are scrambling to figure out what events they want to attend. The big names are tempting, but if you want a totally different experience than anything you can get stateside, you have to be willing to try something new, such as Outlook Festival in Croatia. Now in its 7th installment, Outlook is known as the largest “bass music and Soundsystem Culture festival” in Europe. The festival takes place from September 3rd to 7th, nestled amongst the beautiful coastlines and ancient ruins of Fort Punta Christo, just outside of Pula, Croatia.

Aside from the dynamic lineup, Outlook Festival is hosted at one of the most unusual and historical venues in the world: Fort Punta Christo. Fort Punta Christo was built in the mid-eighteen hundreds and was a major port in the past. During the event, the brilliant minds at Outlook transform it into festival grounds boasting 12 arenas and stages. Be sure to stop by The Moat, which is a 100-meter long narrow stage with 5-meter high walls built in the actual moat that was used to protect the fort. Feel like being in a more intimate, indoor setting? Get down to The Dungeon, a 300-person enclosed room that curves 180 degrees. To see some of the biggest acts of the festival, head to Fort Arena 1, where headliners will be providing the bass heavy beats until 5 am! And perhaps for a slightly scary but once in a lifetime chance, visit Noah’s Ballroom, arguably one of the most unique stages ever.

During the day, attendees can take advantage of Outlook’s Beach Parties. “The Beach” is located just steps away from the fort and is the primary daytime venue. Complete with daytime beach music, BBQ and water activities, the beach is a place where people can relax, recharge, or simply keep the party going. Outlook attendees also have the option to reserve a spot on Outlook’s famous Boat Parties. 40 parties hosted by the UK’s hottest clubs and labels, where party-goers set sail in the Bay of Petracone on boats with stages, dance floors, and fully stocked bars.

There are many standout acts to see at Outlook this year. The action kicks off with an opening concert at The Roman Amphitheater in Pula, a 2,000-year-old coliseum. Providing the music for this surreal venue is former Fugee’s superstar, Ms. Lauryn Hill, with support from Andrew Ashong and vocalist Fatima. The acclaimed Submotion Orchestra will accompany all of these acts. This event is a separate ticket from the festival ticket and has a limited capacity.
Fans should do their best to see the drum and bass veteran Andy C, who has proven to be a staple at festivals because of his fast paced mixing and great production. There is also a strong presence of music that combines electronic sounds with classic dancehall and other island flavors. This music lends itself perfectly to the lost paradise atmosphere that Outlook creates. Check out Radikal GuruParly B, and Strategy. For fans looking for a darker sound, be sure to see U.K. dubstep pioneers, Digital Mystiks. The duo is known for their unique sound that contains the intensity you’d expect from dubstep while surprising you with melodies that are lacking in much of the genre. For those who like a more upbeat and lively set, look no further than Dub Phizix, who fuses drum and bass with different styles better than anyone in the game. If nothing else, Outlook provides attendees the opportunity to hear sounds that wouldn’t be prominent at most U.S. festivals.

Outlook offers a variety of ticket options; standard GA tickets are about $260 USD. You can also combine your ticket to the opening concert and the festival for around $320 USD. The festival offers both on-site and off-site accommodation options as well. On-site options include regular camping (rental equipment is also available), or VIP boutique camping in the Pod-Pad Village. Off-site accommodations include private apartments or rooms at the Bi Village Resort, which is about a 10 minute drive away. Festival organizers have also done everything they can to make your travel arrangements hassle-free, as many travel options can be grouped with your festival ticket.

Outlook Festival 2012

The journey may be long, but Outlook Festival has found a home that creates an atmosphere unlike any other. It may seem crazy to travel so far away when there are so many festivals here in the states, but with the price of festivals on the rise, it is important to focus on the overall experience. Sure, it’s all about the music, but any festival veteran will agree that the right environment is vital. Outlook provides a combination of feel-good music with an amazing venue resulting in an experience attendees won’t find anywhere else.  If you decide to attend this festival, prepare to fully submerge yourself for four days of long sunshine-filled days and even longer bass-filled nights.
