“Are You Shpongled?”
That was the question posed to the universe in 1998 by Simon Posford and Raja Ram on Shpongle’s debut album, Are You Shpongled? The pioneering release, which spanned 78 minutes of meandering psybient alchemy, connected a web of previously disparate musical dots. Combining psytrance, world music and ambient soundscapes, the album flows seamlessly between genres, gathering momentum as it moves toward “Divine Moments of Truth,” a mesmerizing homage to the consciousness-altering power of DMT.

Seventeen years and five albums later, Shpongle remain on the forefront of psychedelic music, both in the studio and on the road. In 2011, Posford began touring with the Shpongletron, a three-story, projection-mapped structure built and brought to life by MassArt grad and Boston resident Peter Berdovsky, known in the video jockey world as Zebbler. In the past, the Shpongletron has featured a sculpture of Shpongle’s trippy face logo, two pairs of wings, a laser-shooting eye and two platforms for dancers and hooping performances. For Shpongle’s 2014 spring tour, Zebbler unveiled the Shpongletron 3.0, a smaller but more advanced structure with pixel-mapped LEDs and infinity mirrors.

Posford and the newly refurbished Shpongletron 3.1 will hit seven northeast venues between February 20 and April 4, accompanied by Zebbler and special guest Phutureprimitive. Ticket prices range from $22 – $25, before fees. The tour launches in Burlington, VT, Providence and New Haven, circles the country clockwise and concludes with four northeast stops in Pittsburgh, Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia.
