A weekend getaway, a music festival, a celebration of art, and a community center — Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) has it all. This year’s celebration is held at Lake San Antonio Recreation Area, a lakeside campground in Bradley, CA on Memorial Day Weekend, May 21st to 25th. With a lineup released early in the season, it’s impressive to see many strong names attending, making LIB a contender for top Memorial Day festival. Top-billing acts like Flume, AlunaGeorge and SBTRKT combine with rising names like Ellie Herring, Phutureprimitive and Made in Heights to form a simmered-down electronic lineup that is relaxed in sound but explosive in nature. With an intensely talented lineup set in a spiritually driven environment, LIB holds its own during one of the most competitive festival weekends of the year.

LIB hosts not only multiple stages, but multiple grounds for separate activities. Separated into the Lucent Temple of Consciousness, The Village, The Learning Kitchen, and the Marketplace, each area provides a unique experience for folks of various interests. The Temple offers seminars, spiritual workshops, yoga, dance, meditation, and more, catering to the mind-body connection and promoting spiritual and physical health. The Village is a commune-inspired center featuring a Sacred Fire, Ancestral Arts Arbor and Community Lodge, all of which offer an insight into simpler ways of being, including ancestral arts, ancient and spiritual education, and sustainability awareness. The Learning Kitchen follows through with this sentiment by offering nutrition classes, culinary demonstrations, and seminars to promote physical health. With its community-driven mission, it’s no surprise that LIB holds a “Leave it Better, Leave it Beautiful” standard for its festival. Guests are encouraged to bring minimal waste and to pick up after everyone (not just themselves) upon leaving.

Art at LIB is a long-standing tradition. For the seventh year, Do Art Foundation, a not-for-profit organization aimed at promoting public art will be providing exhibits, including art inspired by and created at this year’s festival. Artists will be presented on stages where they can be viewed creating original pieces in the spirit of LIB. On Sunday night, The Lightning In a Paintcan ARTWALK is held, at which a silent auction of work will be held and prints can be ordered to be shipped home. Additionally, art installations — ranging from small interactive works to monumental sculptures — will be scattered across the grounds for an art-immersive experience for all.

Festival coordinators have listened to attendees feedback and transformed the weekend, providing updates to make the experience even better. With a new grounds layout designed to make travel between stages easier and minimized dusty areas, the environment of LIB has significantly improved this year. After last year’s above-average temperature weather, main stage dance floors and other areas on the grounds have large-scale shade areas, making finding an oasis easier. As an added measure, extra water stations (and better water quality management) have been added to keep festival-goers safe and hydrated. Plus, festival staff will be working to better manage entrances and exits to keep queue times down to a minimum, though campers are still being asked to “wait out the lines” and relax on the campgrounds at the end of the festival.
