As Memorial Day Weekend draws closer and closer, festival line-up announcements have been coming in droves. A few short weeks after releasing initial information about this year’s festival, Lightning in a Bottle has announced their 2014 artist lineup. The lineup is rich with both major headliners and up-and-coming talent, providing plenty of variety for newcomers and festival veterans alike. It’s too late to take advantage of the festival’s early bird ticket offer, but you can still get full weekend and two-day passes beginning at $195.

This year’s headliners include techno legend Moby (performing a DJ set), electronic rock duo Phantogram, livetronica group Beats Antique, and house producer Amon Tobin. Trap-infused artists Baauer and What so Not (Flume’s side-project) are also on the bill, and Break Science will offer a set blending elements from hip-hop, funk, and breakbeat. Deep house producer and Dirty Bird Records founder Claude VonStroke will also be performing, as well as the world’s funkiest diplomat The Polish Ambassador.
Though the initial slate of headliners is impressive, Lightning In A Bottle has taken care to incorporate a number of lesser-known and diverse acts to set itself apart from its more mainstream rivals. Among these are producer Lee Burridge, who some may recognize from his many appearances at Burning Man where he mingles with fans while playing a set from one of the festival’s famously abstract stages. Random Rab, another Burning Man veteran, will definitely be worth checking out. Rab’s musical resume is impressive to say the least, having toured as a classically trained trumpet player, a front man for a metal band, bass player in a country band, and manning the decks in a jazz-fusion project; all of these experiences blend seamlessly for his memorable festival sets. Australian producer Thomas Jack is another act to consider seeing at LiB for his experimental sound blending traditional house elements with saxophones and other jazz instruments. The UK tech-house duo Simian Mobile Disco have become festival staples over the years thanks to their advanced live setup that encourages improvisation and guarantees a unique set each time.

Lightning In A Bottle 2014: General Information

Lightning in a Bottle sets itself apart from other fests thanks to a strong focus on healthy living and building a sense of community among its attendants. Fans have the option of participating in yoga classes, workshops, and seminars from special guest speakers between catching live sets. Workshops cover everything from healthy eating to tips on environmental conservation, and the yoga classes feature respected instructors from around the country. The workshops and yoga classes will be taught in the Lucent Temple, located at the center of the festival grounds, which also offers massages and bodywork as well as its own line-up of performing artists to set a relaxed mood ideal for the introspection and meditation encouraged there. The Living Village is a cultural experiment on the festival grounds and seeks to educate participants in what goes into creating a truly independent, self-sustaining community. Villagers, as LiB calls attendees, have the option to take classes in archery, carving, and fire making and can relax in one of the village lodges, which are built mostly from recycled materials. The festival was recognized by A Greener Festival – a non-profit organization dedicated to helping art and music festivals adopt environmentally friendly practices – last year for its outstanding effort in preserving the festival grounds. Art also plays a major role in the festival, and you can expect to see artists painting and sculpting live, with some of their creations being put up for the festival’s own silent auction.

Lightning In A Bottle 2014: Ticket  Information

With the festival industry growing more and more crowded every summer, Lightning in a Bottle has enjoyed continued success with each passing year. This is in no small part due to its huge focus on creating a nurturing, educational, environment for all in attendance. Scene critic “The Festival Guy” gave the fest a stellar review, citing the people, stages, and overall vibe as the highlights of the weekend. “If you can’t have a good time at LiB…you need to seek help from a trained professional.” With an endorsement like that, it’s easy to see why The Do Lab have built their reputation as one of the premier festival organizers around right now.

Steve's obsession with music began when he was 16; he saw his then-favorite band, Metallica, play the TD Garden in Boston. His musical tastes have broadened since then, but he is still chasing that feeling of excitement & unity he felt at his first show. His introduction to the dance music came when friends brought him to a Bassnectar show, and he hasn't looked back since. When Steve heard MASS EDMC were looking for writers, he jumped at the chance to get more involved. Writing for MASS EDMC has given Steve a rare opportunity to combine two of his passions: writing & live music.
