Ultra Music Festival is one of the biggest and most iconic festivals in the world. Dubbing themselves “the World’s Premier Electronic Music Festival,” it’s really hard to argue. Year after year, the Ultra crew brings in a plethora of artists to please the thousands of dancing fans that flock to Miami. It’s an experience that all fans of electronic music should experience at least once.
Every year, Ultra books their headliners and first batch of artists to build interest. The real fun, however, comes with the phase 2 announcement. After the anticipation of phase 1, fans spent weeks praying to the rave gods that their favorite artists would be included in the second wave of releases. Last week, Ultra released phase 2.

Ultra has served up a delicious dose of talented artists from a plethora of genres. Some artists, like Fedde Le Grand, Cosmic Gate, and John Digweed, come as no surprise; Ultra has become a yearly occurrence for them. Others, however, incite a little more shock and excitement. Jack U will be making their first ever festival appearance at Ultra. Mat Zo, who dropped his wildly successful Damage Control album and tour this year, will perform his set. Trance fans should be happy with the release, as Aly & Fila, John O’Callaghan, and Myon & Shane 54 will be taking their talents to South Beach. Bass heads should rejoice as well: Alvin Risk, Gramatik, Paper Diamond, and Pegboard Nerds will turn up. The lineup has become elite, as expected.
The big names in phase 2 helped to solidify the weekend, but it’s the sub-genres that draw the most praise. Each genre that was represented in phase 1 received extra support, but none more so than big room house. By adding Cedric Gervais, Dannic, Dyro, Sandro Silva, The Stafford Brothers, and Ummet Ozcan, Ultra solidified their status as the place to be for fans of big room and progressive house. With booming drops and soaring melodies, the main stage should be bumping the entire weekend.

Along with the phase 2 lineup, Ultra released a rough draft of their projected set times. In other words, it’s time to start preparing for inevitable heartbreak when you can’t see one of your favorite acts take stage due to conflicts (Hardwell, Subfocus, Paul van Dyk, Cirez D, AND Fedde Le Grand at the same “time”? Pfst, good luck). If you’re struggling with conflicts, your best bet may be to hit up a pool party during the week. The Winter Music Conference is a legendary week, known for daytime gatherings with big names and popped bottles. Don’t be a fool like I was; do a pool party. Check out the official pool party events here.

Tickets for this years Ultrafest are at the priciest end of the spectrum, but with Ultra, you always get what you pay for. General admission tickets are $399 before taxes and fees, so you’ll be flipping the wallet upside down for this. Sadly, VIP tickets are sold out already, but, seriously, they were $600 –  ain’t nobody got time for that.). As for travel, the Miami-Dade county public transit system is pretty helpful. The train system is pretty efficient, as my time in Miami in 2012 went smoothly. They run to most of the major hotels and such, but if it happens to miss yours, cabbies know where to make their money. (You may have to fight for a cab, though.)
