Hip-Hop and Electronic Music Enthusiasts Unite at Outlook Festival 2015

March 12th, 2015

It’s that time of year again. Electronic music fans are hibernating indoors waiting for the snow to melt while scouring the internet for the hottest festivals to attend this summer. Many larger festivals boast well-known progressive-house headlining DJs and producers, with locations all around the United States and the world. Since 2008, however, the organizers of Outlook Festival have been digging deep into the world of bass and hip-hop music, showcasing well-tenured MCs, drum and bass producers, and more. Check out our 2014 Festival Preview of Outlook for even more information about this unique overseas event.

Outlook is held on a beautiful peninsula in Fort Punta Christo, Croatia. Since the festival is held September 2nd to 6th, you can expect to avoid the mass amounts of summer tourists and hopefully experience some milder temperatures. The tropical landscape makes for some pretty spectacular views at the various stages and performance locations.

The Opening Concert on September 2nd, held the day before the official start of the festival, is held in Pula Arena, one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the entire world. This event is separate from the Outlook Festival, so make sure to purchase tickets from the event page.
The festival itself features a range of different stages that only help to cement Outlook as a visual wonder. Catch the headlining artists and live performers at Harbour Arena, with a picturesque view of the Pula Bay by day, and spectacular light shows by night. Boat Parties offer a more intimate setting as you sail across the open water by the Istrian coastline. The Moat, historically used to protect Fort Punta Christo, was transformed into a performance space of epic proportions. Imagine what pumping bass must sound like in a 100 meter long moat with walls towering at 7 meters in height. Noah’s Ballroom, a small circular pit, was once an 18th Century fort. This stage has become a famous festival favorite due to its unique acoustics and historic architecture. If you’re looking to enjoy the open space and beautiful ocean views, Beach Parties will have you soaking up the sun and bass music all day long.
In 2011, Outlook Festival began to expand by hosting a greater number of attendees and stages. While some audiences prefer the festival’s former smaller, intimate environment, this expansion has allowed for some bigger-name acts to grace the stages. The festival itself is held in Croatia, but many of this year’s artists hail from the United Kingdom, such as Boy Better Know and Wiley, who specialize in British grime. Both old and new-school New York hip-hop is represented by groups like Run the Jewels, Flatbush Zombies, Pete Rock, Jeru the Damaja, and The Beatnuts. You can also find more experimental performers like Dutch electronic music trio Noisia, dubstep duo Digital Mystikz, garage-influenced DJ EZ, electronic music artist Goldie, and electronic music duo Mount Kimbie, to name just a few. Many of these acts will push audiences out of their comfort zone and expose them to a multitude of genres in their sets. Legendary reggae DJ David Rodigan, who’s been in the music industry for 40 years now, will be sure to get everyone moving with island-inspired rhythms and dance beats. Twenty-year-old female British rapper Little Simz spits fire over tracks with experimental production. The lineup so far represents a wide array of artists in the bass music genre, from hip-hop veterans making beats since the ’90s to newer producers delivering their own takes on funk and R&B music – and it’s only the beginning. Expect more artist announcements in the coming months.

Super Early Bird and Early Bird tickets have already sold out, but you can still purchase a standard ticket for around $215. If you’re looking to get the full-fledged festival experience by staying at the campsite, you can purchase a festival standard ticket and campsite pass for around $292. Don’t fret if you can’t front the cash just yet – you can put down a deposit of around $61 to secure your festival ticket (camping not included) and pay the rest by July 1st.
Additionally, you can apply to be a festival volunteer. If you are chosen, you could help with Stage Management, Stewarding, or Artist Relations (though you might get stuck with Litter Picking but for a fully funded ticket, it’s a pretty solid deal). Mainstage Travel has created full packages complete with flight, festival ticket, and accommodations.

Outlook provides many options for accommodations. Hostel rooms are sold out, but you can still choose from camping, boutique camping, and camper vans. Outlook will also be selling tents on location, useful for overseas travellers looking to avoid extra luggage charges on their flights.
People from all over the world come together at Outlook Festival in celebration of worldwide bass music. That feeling of cross-cultural unity has brought back many attendees year after year. Stand-out performers in a naturally beautiful setting make Outlook an eye-opening and worthwhile investment for those seeking to engage in a festival experience abroad. Take a look at last year’s highlight video to get an understanding of what you could experience this coming fall.
