One of the best festivals in the United States is Paxahau’s Movement Electronic Music Festival, which recently announced its phase one lineup; it is returning to Hart Plaza, Detroit over Memorial Day weekend (May 24th to 26th) for its ninth year in 2014. The festival has been known by various different monikers, but the heart has always remained the same – techno. There is no better place to celebrate techno than in its birthplace and both local and international talent flock to the Motor City annually to throw down some of the best sets heard all year.
Movement is the type of festival where you don’t have to know every single name on the line up when you buy your ticket. In fact, that’s half the point – Movement is as much about dancing along to the beats of familiar artists as it is discovering a new favorite.  That being said, there are a number of notable acts heading to Detroit this year; Dixon, Mike Huckaby, Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Simian Mobile Disco and Tale of Us are just a few definitely worth checking out.  If you’d still prefer to preview the artists you’re not familiar with, check out the official Movement Spotify playlist, which features tracks by almost every artist announced in phase one. See the full list of phase one artists below.

The environment and experience of Movement is unlike most other festivals –  the crowd is diverse (especially when it comes to dance moves), there is little to no visible sponsorship, and the line up always represents both well established talent and about-to-be-giant acts from across the globe. It is because of this that Movement has become a highly respected event, and one of many artists’ favorites to play. This year, the festival will feature free WiFi, stacked after parties each night, an interactive technology center, and multiple art installations to amuse, delight and stun attendees. For those worried about the cost, the festival is actually extremely reasonably priced. Though tickets will cost slightly more than they have in previous years, the price is still affordable for anyone on a budget and the overall cost is still significantly less than you would pay for other festivals, especially considering the level of talent that the line up boasts. Tier one three-day GA passes start at $110, while tier one three-day VIP passes start at $230; this price will go up, so it’s worth buying a ticket sooner rather than later. Electric Shepherdess was born out of my frustration with nightlife options and a constant desire to dance. After a few years of adoration from afar, I partnered with my long-time friends, MASS EDMC, to spread our message far and wide. When I'm not tending to my flock, I'm writing, dancing, editing, managing, reading or curating. I believe in fancy hats and enjoy glitter, disco and lazers, often for days.
