Downtempo, ambient, experimental, smooth glitch, dubstep with a dash of world-influence and lucid break-beat – these descriptors only begin to explain the creations of Jake Atlas, known in the music scene as Thriftworks. While Thriftworks spent many years curating his sound back in Pennsylvania since the age of 16, he moved to the Bay Area in his 20s to take his career to the next level. He describes his influences as a mix of “ethnic stuff, vocal chants, Japanese kotomusic, soulful and strange female vocals.”
Although Thriftworks may not necessarily be a household name just yet, he’s racked up festival performances at Symbiosis, Electric Forest, Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle, Counterpoint, Wakarusa, and Gem and Jam – not to mention he’s also opened for artists like Bassnectar and Mimosa. As his following increases, it’s only fitting that the takes on the entire U.S. for the 16-stop “Low Speed High Drag” tour. Fans can expect an ethereal sample-heavy based performance with the chance to unite with other experimental music-lovers. Until then, take a listen to some of the latest releases by Thriftworks.
