HORSE MEAT DISCO

Now approaching their tenth year of existence, the four man DJ club collective Horse Meat Disco have continued to lead the way in the disco field with packed residencies at their HQ Eagle London in London’s inner city Vauxhall, Cielo and verious venues in New York, Prince Charles in Berlin and Silencio/Wanderlust in Paris. Inspired by the music and inclusive ethos of New York’s heady club scene in the 80s & 90s the collective have garnered a unique reputation for throwing amazing parties with unmatchable sets. The quartet of djs each mix their own individual interpretations of the disco sound with a soundtrack that marries their expertise and shared knowledge and experience in the field. Expect all manner of dancefloor movers from classic to cosmic to deep disco, italo, punk funk, house, even techno, electric bangers and just plain old rare oddities. The collective always keep an healthy eye on the dancefloor whilst never forgetting growing current sounds.

As well as their weekly club for the more discerning end of the weekend hedonist which happens every sunday in London the collective are trailblazing the disco heat every week across Europe, America and the rest of the world. Their skills in turning the party round came to the attention of revered Parisian sound architect for Chanel Mr Michel Gaubert who regularly enliists the boys to play for Chanel worldwide. The fashion world has certainly embraced the gang having been enlisted to dj for brands as diverse as Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Acne and Diesel. Their current schedule sees them juggling dj dates with serious studio time as they record their first artist album collaborating with some of their favourite artists (expected at the end of 2013). For those who can’t wait to see what they come up with in the studio, the boys have three successful compilation lps out on Strut / K7! Records with album number 4 out in late May 2013. Their real passion for the nightclub dancefloor burns as strong as ever seeing them play at Festivals far and wide most notably at Glastonbury with the awesome NYC Downlow experience, Bestival Isle of Wight, Lovebox, Parklife and Warehouse Project Manchester, Electric Elephant in Croatia, Vivid at Sydney Opera House, Future Music Festival Australia-wide PS1 NYC and FYF Festival Los Angeles.

JUSTIN STRAUSS

Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history – no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Since he was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who’s-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you’d ever want to go to. Starting as DJ at New York’s legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world. He has worked with the gamut of artists – Depeche Mode, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, and Goldfrapp, to name a few– and on over 200 records!

Much of the new dance crowd that goes to hear Justin DJ today, whether at subMercer, The Standard, Highbar, Soho House, or Love, doesn’t necessarily know his history; they simply love his spinning because he always keeps them dancing and surprised, seamlessly mixing between choice classics, delectable rarities and innovative beats. For Justin, no genre or style is off-limits – he can and will mix anything, so long as he can keep the crowd enthralled. His self-proclaimed mission is “connecting the dots” between what might otherwise seem disparate musical periods and styles, while introducing exciting new sounds. He does so with infectious passion, subverting preconceptions about what’s old and new, and inspiring young DJs with his masterful skill and ever-youthful spirit.

But Justin Strauss doesn’t stop there. As half of the production duo, Whatever/Whatever, he continues to produce and mix records, working on remixes for the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Beyonce, La Roux and more. In fact, he doesn’t stop at all. Like the amazing city he’s dedicatedly kept dancing since 1980, Justin just keeps going.

below the surface of the dance music industry, a saturation of otherwise unknown djs constantly vie for recognition. the competition is undeniable and often creates schisms among the very people who should be working together to keep the music moving forward. fully aware of this fact, mike swells first emerged on the boston scene as a face in the crowd, supporting house music parties throughout the city. after logging many late nights in clubs and at afterhours, swells eventually became a familiar fixture of the beantown crew. once he was sure that his commitment to his hometown’s edm scene-and the djs behind it-could not be questioned, he started asking friends for deck time. it didn’t take long for him to graduate from those early gigs to proper sets at venues throughout the city.

in 2004, mike became a resident at rise, boston’s only after-hours club. the pairing was meant to be: mike’s personal and musical energy perfectly complemented the positive vibe of this unique nightclub. he regularly spun five-hour sets to the musically discerning community of early-morning revelers, weaving soundscapes that stretched from the dubby depths of downtempo to the undulating intensity of everything else underground. mike’s dream of holding court alongside of some of the world’s most highly regarded artists-including josh wink, tom stephan, steve porter, and chus & ceballos-had become a reality at his own home club.

it was inevitable that mike’s infectious grooves would radiate to cities beyond the confines of new england. he has rocked the decks at parties from miami’s winter music conference to new york city, dc to cleveland to los angeles, sharing the booth with dj’s like eric prydz, chris fortier, and markus schultz. the summer of 2007 saw mike’s first international gig, playing for clubbers on the caribbean island of st. maarten. dubbed the labor day music conference, this three day ‘party in paradise’ afforded mike the opportunity to dj along side the crystal method, whos 1997 hit ‘get busy child’ served as mike’s gateway to dance music.

back home mike has continued to develop his nights at rise, playing regularly in both the lounge and the main room. outside of the booth, he handles bookings, marketing, and public relations for the club, helping ensure that the best talent is brought to boston’s only proper venue. mike maintains two other dj residencies. every thursday he hosts a weekly party called ‘hom’ at om lounge in cambridge, and once a month he plays at the red door in portsmouth, nh. all remaining waking hours are spent working in his studio – the womb from where he nurses original productions, remixes, and edits to dancefloor maturity. mike’s first track, ‘tawdry,’ was released on slanted black records. his next project, a remix of eli wilkie’s ‘d’vibin’ on reversible records, is featured on steve porter’s february 2008 iDJ magazine mix CD. mike swells has joined forces with rise, base bookings and ‘party in paradise’ to bring inspiring dance music to boston and beyond.
