EDMC RADIO Interviews Music

EDMC RADIO: Robokid // Lifted Contingency [Boston, MA]

May 1st, 2014

EDMC RADIO w Robokid

No stranger to the beat scene, 22 year old Massachusetts native Robokid aka Ethan Budnick has been producing future bass, R&B, soul and other niche genres since 2009. Picking up DJing in 2012 in order to share and play his tunes out for friends, Robokid has steadily developed both his production and gig portfolio, joining forward-thinking sound collectives such as Moving Castle, Lifted Contingency, The Brio Life, and Bad Taste.
Robokid’s studio work has gained the producer ample praise abroad, earning him plays from BBC Radio 1xtra’s B. Traits and Toddla T. You can catch Robokid and his music every Friday on RWD.fm from 6 to 8pm.

When it comes to performing live, I tend to bounce around from genre to genre and am constantly changing moods. I have pretty bad ADHD so I think that plays a part in my approach. I got into DJing through producing just because friends started asking me to play shows and I wanted a way to play my own tracks and tracks that my friends were sending me for a live audience. I view production as my main focus, but over the past few months I have been getting more gigs and I am always looking for my next chance to play.

My motivation is always changing, but I would say right now the continued support from my peers and those individuals who I strongly look up to is keeping me driven. Also, pushing boundaries and delivering the audience with a fresh sound is one of my main goals. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone out to shows and heard the same thing over and over again.

As of lately, I have been really into this new collective that I am a part of called Moving Castle. Me and a few other kids decided that we were all creating very similar stuff and all had similar hobbies (sitting on the internet/Twitter/Soundcloud 90% of our time) so we figured we’d get together and make some mixtapes. We dropped our first compilation on 4/20 featuring myself, Kappa Kavi, Jailo, Manila Killa, AObeats, Ba-Kuura, Hunt for the Breeze, Dirty Chocolate, Objectives, Bonae Bonae and Vices. I really don’t know how to classify our music but we have had a lot of comparisons to Cashmere Cat, Wave Racer and other forward thinking “future bass” & jersey club producers. Some other really influential artists that I have been following lately include Lido, Alizzz, Ryan Hemsworth, Sinjin Hawke, everyone from the MOD Crew, 813, Lockah, Phazz and way too many others to name.

For this mix I tried to capture the essence of Moving Castle’s sound and also went with a more upbeat vibe since summer is coming in only a few more weeks. Most of the songs were produced by members of the Moving Castle collective and other artists that I am generally very inspired by.
