EDMC RADIO w/ DJ Steppo

With strong roots in New England starting off as a drum and bass DJ in 1999, DJ Steppo has rocked crowds from Boston to Miami, San Francisco and back. Steppo has a serious passion for music and it’s consistently evident through his track selections and dedication to the craft. DJ Steppo has shared stages with Bad Company, Goth Trad, Pendulum, Adam F, Mayhem, Juju, Reid Speed, Mary Anne Hobbes, and countless other taste makers of dubstep and drum and bass culture. In 2012, Steppo switched gears turning his focus to the sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house. He is a member of the Volume Productions crew from Providence, RI, and a long time supporter of famed after-hours spot, .:Therapy.

/////////// WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO DJING? WHAT DRIVES YOU?

My favorite part about DJing is of course making people happy and taking them on a voyage through sound.

The best part of doing that is playing people music they might have not been exposed to yet.

/////////// WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU INTO NOW? WHO’S GOT YOUR ATTENTION?

Derek Plaslaiko, Dense and Pika, and Benjamin Damage – all artists I really love right now. My buddy AxH just dropped his latest EP on Tempa, and “Destroy” has been on repeat for the last few weeks in my phone’s playlist. Justin Martin and all the stuff on Dirtybird right now is nuts. Of course techno staples like Juan Atkins, Ben Sims, and Richie Hawtin, as well as some of the not as well-known guys like Cosmin TRG, Motor City Drum Ensemble, and Kamikaze Space Programme. Labels I almost always buy from on the spot are Nonplus, Exit, 50 Weapons, Aus Music and Hotflush Recordings. For non electronic music I’m into death metal; the new Behemoth album is insane.

/////////// WHAT DID YOU GO FOR WITH THIS MIX?

It’s always about having fun. Like I said, I feel it’s my duty as a DJ to play stuff people may have not heard before. These are some of my favorite tracks from over the last year or so that I don’t think get as much play as they should, and I’m excited to share them with everyone!
