Music festivals have been growing, evolving and multiplying since the days of the original Woodstock. Their popularity has skyrocketed recently, you can attend a different festival almost every weekend of the summer, all across the USA or around the world. With the spike in popularity has come a need to diversify the festival experience; each event needs something to set it apart from the saturated list of choices. Over the past decade especially, we have seen the rise of “destination festivals”, usually a winter retreat to an exotic, or tropical location for days of great music and partying on the beach. Whether it takes place in an all inclusive resort or over a week on a mammoth cruise ship, these events have taken the fan experience to the next level, combining what would already be an incredible vacation with a variety of epic musical performances.

Fans who want that destination festival experience but with more of a winter wonderland vibe, look no further than Snowbombing on the slopes of Mayrhofen, Austria. Booked as the “World’s #1 music festival on snow”, this festival will take place from April 4th to 9th, and provides the 5,000 attendees the unique opportunity to ski a magnificent, picturesque resort in the Austrian Alps by day and enjoy the fun of a fully loaded electronic music festival at night. Supplemented with ski competitions, themed costume parties, fancy dress-street parties, forest parties, pool parties, and many more wild events, Snowbombing has established itself as one of the wildest five days in the festival scene.

Taking place since 2000, past lineups have been headlined by some of the biggest names in the business including Skrillex, Carl Cox, Above & Beyond and The Chemical Brothers. The 2016 lineup is out and has met if not exceeded the high expectations. The Prodigy return to top the list and will be accompanied by highly anticipated live performances from Bastille and Netsky. Oliver Heldens, Jamie Jones and Hot Since 82 highlight an impressive lineup of house music heavy hitters, The Martinez Brothers and Marcel Dettman will be taking care of the techno and even well known actor Idris Elba will be showcasing his musical talents on top of the mountain.  With over 50 artists already announced and more on the way, Snowbombing brings an impressive lineup to a festival that, even without music, could stand alone as a first class event.

The shows themselves take place at some of the most distinct and notable stages and venues that any festival can claim, including the Backcountry Party – an event where attendees are shuttled through a 2 km tunnel to “the forgotten valley” of Floitental and spend their evening in a unique venue: the 300 year old mountain lodge. There’s also the Arctic Disco – an absolutely stunning venue built directly into the ice and snow at the top of the mountain that gives attendees a chance to party close to the stars in an actual igloo packed with two dance floors, three bars and decked out with luxurious carpets and furs. It’s not just a gimmick stage either, last year both Skrillex and Carl Cox had sets at the top of the mountain. Overall the festival boasts more than 8 different stages and venues, all of them incredibly unique.

With early bird ticket packages already sold out, rates are starting at 299 euros (approx. $330) for the five days; you can book travel and accommodations through the festival website. They provide lists and pricing of local hotels and resorts around the mountain and options for shuttles from pick-up locations all around Europe right on their website. For those who want to have just as much fun on the way to the festival, there is an official Snowbombing road trip – a 150 car convoy that treks across five countries in two days and includes scheduled parties at hotels along the drive.
An event of this magnitude will not be a cheap vacation, especially for anyone traveling from the US. However, if you have been planning to treat yourself to a once in a lifetime vacation opportunity, this would be money well spent.
